Week's Reflections - 12/24/11

I feel like all of the big news I am including in here happened really early in this week.  I'm almost wondering if I should start posting these on Sundays instead.  Anyway, here goes.  As always, if you have seen or read anything interesting, post it in the comments.  Cheers.

1.) Cornell Wins Bid to Build NYC Tech Campus

As a Cornell alum this is wildly exciting.  This campus in the city has the potential to be a game changer, and I have to admit that I am incredibly jealous of the future generations that will have an opportunity to study there.  I am also filled with intense pride that of all the schools that applied we won the competition; we beat out schools such as Stanford and Columbia to get there.  For those that don't know, this was a competition in which many universities entered proposals for a big NYC land grant and up to 100 million dollars held by Mayor Bloomberg.  It's worth reading about the buildings and plans if you're interested; it's going to be state of the art.

2.) Kim Jong Il

He will be succeeded by his son, Kim Jong Un.  It remains to be seen if the new guy is as crazy as the old guy, but either way, the news of Kim Jong Il's death is pretty big.  Did you know one of his favorite movies was "Friday the 13th" and the rest of the slasher franchise.

3.) Packers lose but Colts win

If you have been following the NFL this year, you'll know that the Packers breaking their undefeated record against the Chiefs was wildly unlikely... almost as unlikely as the Colts winning a single game.  Believe it or not, the Colts followed that win up with a victory over the Texans, who are actually a pretty damn good team.  Personally, I think that continuing to win games is literally the dumbest thing the Colts can do right now.  Their season is over, they might as well limp into the off-season with the number 1 pick in their pocket.  Apparently they still get the first pick if they lose their last game.

4.) Louis CK Live at Beacon Theater

Louis CK is probably the funniest stand up comedian around right now.  It's really interesting to look at how his comedy evolved.  Two or three years ago he was a miserable broke fat guy, and he made that damn funny.  Now he is a super successful comedian with a TV show and sold out shows and all that, and he has still found a lot of hilarious material.  He recently released a recording of his performances at the Beacon Theater, which I actually attended (birthday present for the girlfriend; lucky girl).  It was hilarious, and I highly recommend it.

Interestingly, he is pursuing a new and kind of experimental way of selling the material.  It's very simple.  You can buy it on his site for five bucks.  He wrote this statement about the experiment on his website.  I'm really glad the experiment was successful and people bought it from him - for a very low price - rather than just torrenting it.  You can check out another analysis of this experiment here.

5.) Facebook Post

This is our moment of zen.  Oy.

I pulled this one from here.  FYI to any premeds, studentdoctor.net is an amazing resource.

Merry Christmas!
