I'm trying to pound out a thoughtful (and hopefully interesting) post every day, but I want to start a Saturday column that's much more light hearted, fun, and easier to write... because weekends are supposed to be fun!
So on Saturdays, I'm going to make a post about any interesting things I have done/seen/read/whatever over the past week and would recommend to others. Hopefully as this blog gains some steam and gets some followers, we can turn this into a fun back and forth in the comments section, and you guys can fire back with some things to go do/see/read/whatever.
Since this is the first, and I have had a hectic week with travel, I am probably going to throw in a few things that didn't come up in the last week. In the future, I'll keep things more current.
1.) Touching the Void
My girlfriend and I watched this movie earlier in the week. It is a survival story about two mountain climbers, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates. Simpson badly breaks his leg at over 20,000 ft, and that's just the beginning. Seriously, what this guy endured to get down the mountain and survive is literally mind boggling. Just absolutely beyond comprehension.
I don't want to spoil anything, but I also feel pretty bad for Simon Yates. Apparently the poor guy's eternal nickname is "the man who cut the rope," for the events that transpired. If you see it and post in the comments, it would be fun to discuss the morality of that whole situation.
Anyway, definitely recommend checking this out. The re-enactment acting is actually pretty good.
2.) Kepler 22-b
This is a recently discovered Earth-like planet in the "habitable zone" that is in orbit around a star that is somewhat similar to our own sun. The nerd in me is blown away by this. Apparently it is the closest planet that is similar to ours. Don't get too excited, though; it's still 600 light years away.
I am totally in line with Steven Hawking on the extraterrestrial thing. If we find them, and they're smarter then us... we're probably in some hot water. That said, I still get kind of giddy and excited at the thought of finding life in outer space, and the sci-fi part of me also gets all excited about the idea of us colonizing another planet in a thousand years and Star Wars and lightsabers and... all that.
Evidently this planet is just the first confirmed of 50 or so other candidate planets that may have similar features. Check out that article at the bottom (1).
3.) Ocean - John Butler
I play a little guitar myself, although I'll be the first to admit that I'm not very good. At all. That's a post for another time though.
Anyway, my friend who is a good guitar player showed me this recently. This may be old news for some, but my mind has been completely blown. Take a look:

4.) The Carriage House Cafe
If you ever end up in Ithaca - and unless you're going to be a student at Cornell, I have no idea why you would do something so silly - absolutely go grab some food at the Carriage House Cafe. It is probably the best restaurant I have ever been to. I'm not sure how they do it, but they somehow actually manage to infuse "I love you" into their food.
They are really big on locally grown food and sustainability and that sort of thing. They make their own bread in house (not that I eat bread; see Paleo Diet), and I believe they grow some of the herbs and spices they use in their garden.
They also have the best bacon in the world. Seriously, it's so good that it can actually be a conversation starter at Cornell (hey... gimme us break, it's a little boring up there sometimes).
5.) Ithaca Apricot Wheat
I'm away from Ithaca for a few days, and I must be missing it or something, because this is the second Ithaca reference. This one, though, you don't have to actually go to Ithaca for.
I'm not a big beer lover; I got through my college career on Keystone Light, aka frat water, and mixed drinks. That said: I don't always drink beer, but when I do, I prefer Ithaca Apricot Wheat.
I hope this doesn't sound too hypocritical given the Paleo proclivities I divulged earlier. This beer is just one of my "cheats." Grab a sixer some time.
6.) Wegmans Chocolate Covered Macadamia Nuts
Hopefully you are lucky enough to have a Wegmans grocery store near you. They are absolutely phenomenal, consistently rated highest in both consumer and employee satisfaction from year to year.
They also produce chocolate covered macadamia nuts that I think are more addictive than crack. Seriously, I can't stay away from these things. I actually think I'm going to have to commit to never buying them again, because when I have them near me, the box just vanishes.
When I finally got home earlier today, I was tired. And then I saw my box of Wegmans chocolate covered macadamia thoughts. I thought, okay. I can have a few. 15 minutes later, the box is gone.
Just to break that down for you. That comes out to: 1760 calories, 120 grams of fat, and 152 grams of sugar. I know... but I'm telling you.... it was absolutely worth it.
Hope you guys are having a great weekend!
