Where Am I Now?

WE HAVE MOVED TO: A Theory of Living

It's been a couple years since I've updated the blog with my current status.  I think it's time to remedy that.

For an update on me...

I'm still in medical school, and now I'm a third year.  I did very well on Step 1 (but not super ZOMG well) scoring about a 250.  Based on this score projector, which has a ton of data in it and worked well for most people I know, I was supposed to get just over a 260.  Well, apparently I choked on test day and ended up closer to 250.

Huge bummer.

Although I am disappointed, I am happy that at least I still have a good enough score to realistically be able to get into any specialty I want if I position myself well.  I also recognize that the overwhelming majority of people who take the test would be thrilled with a score like that, so I think I should probably just count my blessings.

At the moment, despite the fact that it's January of third year, and decision time is looming in the next several months, I'm still not sure what specialty I want to do.  I've succeeded in convincing myself of various specialties at various different points, but none have truly stuck for long.  Really, though.  It has changed monthly.  Thus far I have at different points been absolutely convinced that the answer was: EM, IM, Surgery, Psych, Ophtho, and Family.  I'm not joking at all. When I say convinced, I mean convinced.

Another option I'm considering, if I were to be totally honest, is that I'm not fully convinced that I want to be in medicine after I graduate, since there are good opportunities to leverage an MD in consulting and other business ventures.  I would probably still complete a residency, to have a good fall back option and to be a fully trained "doctor," but it would affect what residency I would choose. Would I bother doing a miserable 5 year surgery residency when I wasn't planning on even doing medicine?  Heck no.

I'm going to be posting my "Clerkship Reviews" of the clerkships I have already done, and after that I'm going to post some of my more in depth thoughts on medical school, healthcare, and the path to becoming a doctor, now that I have a decent amount of experience in all three.

Beyond that, I have one or two exciting things I'm working on, and I'm excited to share them with you!

Good luck out there.

And again: If any old/new readers find their way here and would be interested in posting a guest post, please let me know!!!
